Why We Do Not Rent Our Trailers to Box Trucks?
Occasionally, customers ask if they can tow one of our trailers using a box truck.
While we understand why this may seem like a convenient option, Tyson Transport & Rentals does not rent our trailers to customers using box trucks. Our policy is based on safety and equipment compatibility.
The Biggest Concern: Turning Clearance
The primary issue is the way most box trucks are designed.
Unlike a pickup truck equipped with a factory tow package, many box trucks have a large rear bumper with the hitch ball mounted close to the back of the truck.
During tight turns, this design can allow the rear metal bumper of the truck to make contact with the trailer.
The result can be:
- Damage to the trailer
- Damage to the rental truck
- Bent trailer components & tool box
- Damage to the trailer jack
- Unsafe towing conditions
Why Pickup Trucks Are Different
Most pickup trucks equipped with a factory tow package position the hitch receiver farther underneath and behind the vehicle.
This allows the ball mount to extend beyond the rear bumper, creating additional clearance between the truck and trailer during turns.
That extra space significantly reduces the chance of the trailer contacting the tow vehicle during normal maneuvering.
Why Some Rental Companies Can Tow With Box Trucks
You may notice that some large truck rental companies offer trailers designed to be towed behind their own box trucks.
Those trailers are engineered specifically for their equipment. They often use a much longer trailer tongue and are designed as part of a matched towing system to provide additional turning clearance.
Our trailers were not designed for that specific application.
Because we cannot verify compatibility with every make and model of box truck, we choose the safest option by not allowing them to tow our trailers.
Our Commitment to Safety
Our goal isn't to make renting more difficult, it's to help protect our customers and our equipment.
By requiring a compatible tow vehicle, we reduce the risk of:
- Trailer-to-vehicle contact
- Expensive damage
- Delays during your trip
- Unsafe towing situations
Need a Tow Vehicle?
If you don't own a truck capable of towing one of our trailers, we recommend renting a properly equipped pickup truck with:
- An appropriate tow rating
- The correct hitch receiver
- The proper hitch ball
- A functioning 7-way trailer wiring connector (for applicable trailers)
If you're unsure whether your vehicle is compatible, contact Tyson Transport & Rentals before booking. We're happy to help you determine whether your tow vehicle is a safe match for the trailer you plan to rent.
